Some individuals are born with a dimple in their cheek, while others do not have it. Similarly, some people have a visible dimple on their cheeks, while it appears in others as time passes. In reality, a dimple, like a small pit, forms naturally in the cheek of most individuals, resembling the English letter "W." Conversely, for some, this dimple is not visible unless observed over time. This is a genetic trait, meaning it can be inherited from parents. If dimples are present in the family, it indicates the possibility of them appearing in future generations.

This dimple forms before birth and is created during the time when the fetal cheeks on both sides of the lower jaw do not fully fuse in the mother's womb. Consequently, a dimple forms in the cheek, with no other noticeable sign.

In other words, when one part of the fetal cheek is slightly larger than the other before birth, and when both parts come into contact during the process of merging, a dimple becomes apparent on the cheek.

The good news is that this natural characteristic does not cause any harm; it is harmless. However, genetically, it can be passed on to future generations, but it does not have a significant impact due to other factors. It can be removed or created through surgery, but this procedure does carry some risks.

Regarding dimples on the cheeks, some scientists suggest that they are a result of a flaw in the structure of the zygomatic muscle, which is commonly known as the cheek muscle. This large muscle is located on the side of the face and is believed to divide dimples, usually present in one piece.

Research revealed that these facial dimples have evolved through different stages and provide a way for humans to convey their facial expressions to others.

According to studies, the presence of dimples on the cheeks helps individuals draw attention to their smiles and easily express their happiness.
